The challenge
Working in closely with both the project architect and client, the overall objective was to achieve a unique vacation home that took full advantage of the prestigious siting and natural setting. Large expenses of glass were to dominate the living area, with the bedroom wing assuming a more intimate feel. Efficient ventilation and unobstructed views, even with window screening in place, were key design criteria. This was especially important in dealing with the design of the screened porch, as this was to be a focal point of the living area and have sight-lines that matched the window and door detail.
Our solution
To achieve the large areas of glass and venting windows, the 4500 Series Tilt-Turn system was utilized to its full potential. The robust construction of this window system, combined with extensive steel reinforcing, allowed the size limitations to be pushed to the maximum. In keeping with the contemporary design, the windows and doors were coloured black both inside and out with 5 coats of our industrial-rated polyurethane Luxury Finish. The Tilt-Turn operating windows provided the necessary ventilation allowing entire walls to tilt inwards. Tempered glass was utilized in the floor-to-ceiling windows, along with Euro+ High Efficiency Glass. Bronze reflective glass was combined with the High Efficiency Glass in the bedrooms, and acid etching provided the necessary privacy in the spa inspired bathrooms. BetterVu Screens minimized the separation between the inside and the natural surroundings.
